Teen Summer Reading Starts June 2!Teen Summer Reading 2014!

The Teen Summer Reading Program, for teens going into 6th - 12th grades, begins on June 2. This year's theme is Spark a Reaction, so we're going to focus on science by conducting experiments, combining art and chemistry, art and biology, and creating edible science with Cooking Capers. And sign up early for the Murder Mystery Lock-in, where you'll use CSI skills to solve the mystery. We'll also have events every Thursday, whether it's a movie, Lego Club, or a Game Day. STEM Summer Reading - Science Technology Engineering MathAnd of course, there's reading for everyone! Sign up online for the Summer Reading Program starting June 2 and stop at the Information Desk to pick up your reading log. For every 10 hours you read this summer, you get a Grand Prize Ticket and a pick from the prize basket. At 100 hours, you get to pick a free book. Reading logs are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 25. Play the role of a Crime Scene Investigator and solve the murder of a fellow CSI--right in the middle of a CSI convention! Who could the murderer possibly be? Maybe it's you . . .

Tuesday, June 24
Squishy Circuits Experiments, 3:30 – 5 p.m.

With the right ingredients, playdough can conduct electricity! Experiment with a variety of circuits to make LEDs light and buzzers sound.

Re-purpose with the ReStore and make a chalkboard out of an old fan blade. If there's time, there will be a second project too.

Join artist, and altered book enthusiast, Dori Patrick (owner of The Dreaming Bear Art Studio) for an afternoon of fun!  She will show you fun and easy techniques for turning an old book into a small work of art that you will treasure for years to come!

You may have seen what happens when you combine food coloring, milk and dish soap, but we’ll take it one step further. Perform this impressive scientific experiment and turn it into beautiful marbled paper monoprints! Dress for a big mess as you simultaneously become an artist AND a scientist!

More than just a nifty little math trick, Leonardo Fibonacci discovered that the “Golden Ratio” was absolutely everywhere in nature… the spiral in a seashell, the number of seeds in a sunflower, or the star created when slicing an apple in half, etc. You will also find it in most art masterpieces like the Mona Lisa. This ratio, also known as Fibonacci’s sequence, is the basis of today’s art project, so get ready for a mathematically artistic scavenger hunt and create your own masterpiece!
