From the Inside Out: Help Our New Library Take Shape

From the Inside Out: Help Our New Library Take Shape

Next Wednesday, September 30th at 5:15 we’ll have our next charrette here at the library to ask for public input on the design of the new library. Once again Joe Huberty, our architect, will be here to lead an interactive process aimed at getting feedback on design proposals. Since his last visit, Joe has developed floor plans and created renderings to feature alternative design concepts.

A primary goal of this process is to design a library building that is unmistakably about Marion, a library that could be in no other City but Marion. To do that, we need to create an outside that invites you to come inside, and an inside look and feel that makes you want to stay and explore. We need a comfortable place that’s easy to use and enhances your experience. That’s why we need your input.

Joe has ideas about both the interior and exterior, and we need to test them. We need to make sure we’re on the right track toward meeting your needs and expectations. Joe will be showing you alternative designs and looks, asking about your preferences, and exploring the reasons behind what you like and don’t like. You won’t be seeing any finished products, but you will begin to get an idea of what your new library will really be like.

This event will again involve a lot of discussion and free-wheeling brain storming to get at what you’re thinking and feeling about what you see. This is an important step to bring us closer to a final design, but it will not be the last step. Think of it as the step we need to get to the final draft. Then we’ll need at least one more step to make sure that draft is right for Marion.

The charrette will be held here at the library, in the main meeting room. It’s to last about 90 minutes, but if the ideas are still flowing, it may go a little longer.

The September 30th charrette is open to the public. You don’t need to prepare for anything. Just come with ideas and an open mind and Joe will do the rest. If you’re interested in helping us design the new library, please join us at 5:15, here at the Library, on Wednesday, September 30.

EDIT: The date for the third charrette is November 11 at 5:15 p.m.
