In the event of uncomfortable heat or humidity this will be an indoor garden party.

Enjoy the beauty of the finished garden while we discuss Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's classic The Secret Garden.* Known mostly as light literary children's fare, we will take a closer look and discover themes of feminism, loss of empire, otherness, mothering in a patriarchy, and absence. Light refreshments will add an air of refinement to this traditional Victorian event. Registration is required

* Read the book or watch a film adaptation beforehand. The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett (published in 1911) is in the public domain and can be read online or downloaded for free if you are having trouble getting a copy from the library; go to gutenberg.org. There are also multiple movie versions of the story available on DVD through the library.
