April 23 is St George's Day in Spain, more popularly known as the Day of Books & Roses.
Many people go to festive markets to buy books and flowers, particularly roses, to give to their loved ones on St George's Day. These markets are held in the center of towns and villages, particularly Barcelona. They often include other cultural and literary events, such as book signings and readings of classical Spanish or Catalonian literature.
We like this idea so much, that we are continuing the tradition here at the Marion Public Library. During the month of April leading up to St George's Day, sign up each time you come in. On April 23, we will have drawings from those registered -- 50 winners get a single fresh rose and their choice of a gently used free book from our cart. Enjoy yourself or pass along to a loved one!
