The Social Security Administration (SSA) is phasing out the paper notices that they have been sending through the mail to Americans who are eligible for Social Security. Everyone will need to create a my Social Security account on SSA's website. Sign up for a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. By creating an account, you can access your online Social Security Statement and view your estimates of your retirement, disability and survivors benefits. It’s a great financial planning tool!
We're hosting an education and sign-up event on Wednesday, February 18 from 1:00-3:00. Come in and get help creating your account from Jacob McCandless, Acting Operations Supervisor with the Cedar Rapids Social Security Office. This is a 2-hour "open house" program; come in when you can. We'll have computers available and McCandless will walk you through setting up your own personal account at their website. He'll start with a brief 15-minute presentation at 1:00, but you needn't be here for that to come for help a little later.
During the program, you will learn:
- How my Social Security is an essential part of your retirement, disability and survivor benefit planning.
- How my Social Security allows you to verify your earnings history.
- How to create a my Social Security account
